Doan has a background in dance and has performed as a dancer at the 2010 Winter Olympics opening ceremony and as a back-up dancer for Michael Bublé. She has also worked as a dancer in music videos for other recording artists like Big Time Rush and Marianas Trench.

Doan's first major acting role was in the Disney Channel Original Movie Descendants as Lonnie, the daughter of Mulan and Li Shang. She reprised her role in the sequel Descendants 2. She has also had recurring roles on the television series Vikings and Guidance.

In 2017, Doan joined the cast of the Cinemax series Warrior as Mai Ling. The series is produced by filmmaker Justin Lin and based on an original concept by the late Bruce Lee.

Doan is currently filming the upcoming television series The Boys Presents: Varsity, a spin-off of the Amazon Prime Video series The Boys. She will play the role of Nyla, a powerful superhero.
